Your toddler can quickly suffer in the short-term and long-term
damage of sunburn and heat stroke, so keeping your toddler safe in the sun is
crucial. Here are 7 tips to keep your children safe in the sun.
Tip 1: Choose the right sunscreen
Babies’ and toddlers’ skin
is particularly sensitive to the sun and they can get a sunburn must faster
than you realize, even on a cloudy day. Pediatricians recommended a sunscreen
or sunblock of at least SPF 15 that protects from both UVA and UVB rays. Some baby clothing, such as bathing suits and
rash guards, have SPF protection built right in them, but it’s still a good
idea to slather on a layer of sunblock on all exposed skin.
Tip 2: Don’t forget the back of baby’s ears, nose, neck, cheeks,
shoulders and toes too!
Make sure you get cover
all of the high points on your toddler’s body that are more likely to be
exposed to the sun. Also, if your little one is wearing flip-flops or sandals,
it’s not a bad idea to spritz some sunblock on baby’s feet, too.
Tip 3: Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours
Apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before going outdoors (this gives the skin a chance to absorb the lotion), then reapply every two hours - or more often if your child is sweating or playing in water. And don’t be fooled by labels that state the sunscreen is water-resistant or waterproof. You still need to reapply after your toddler gets wet. Also, cloudy days don’t give you an excuse to go without sun protection. Your toddler needs sunscreen even when it’s overcast because up to 80 percent of UV rays can get through clouds.
